Chemical aphrodisiacs are coming onto the market now that are far more powerful in inducing erections and sexual satisfaction than had previously been thought possible. Apart from benefiting people in fairly normal health, these new substances are a major breakthrough for men who have serious medical problems such as diabetes, prostate complications, hormone imbalance, high blood pressure, or partial paralysis. In these cases, the effects of the new chemicals in eliciting erections are truly startling. Everybody is excited about the oral pills. They’re a very important development for men. And since they act as vasodilators, they may prove beneficial in increasing women’s sexual satisfaction as well.

Thus, for men facing erectile dysfunction due to serious medical problems, the best type of lovemaking aids will probably be these new medications, which have been undergoing extensive testing in the United States, England, Europe, and other parts of the world for years. The three main pills currently available are composed of sildenafil, apomorphine, and phentolamine. In general, these drugs almost guarantee an erection lasting from sixty to ninety minutes.

The pills come on the heels of erectile drugs administered by an injection into the skin of the penis or in the form of a tiny pellet inserted into the tip of the penis. These forerunners of the erection pills do, bring on strong, long-lasting erections, but they have several undesirable effects. Reportedly, they’re cumbersome and a bit painful. They can also be irritating to the urethra. But worse than this, they may cause priapism—an erection that stays for hours and won’t go away. It’s a very painful condition that can cause permanent penile damage if an erection persists for more than four hours.

>Priapism requires emergency treatment by a doctor or radiologist, involving an injection of a local anesthetic or an arterial procedure to relieve the buildup of blood pressure inside the penis. Luckily, the new erection pills rarely if ever cause these problems.

The use of the new chemicals does bring up the debate as to whether erectile dysfunction is based on psychological or physical factors. Increasingly, urologists are saying that it’s much more of a physical problem, which has its basis in circulation and blood pressure. Although it’s possible to take specific tests to see if a patient’s problem is vascular, those tests are expensive and time-consuming, involve the use of special ultrasound equipment, and are often more trouble than they’re worth. The trend among urologists will likely be to simply prescribe one or another of the erection pills and see if it works, since there are virtually no serious side effects to the pills when used as prescribed.

Either the man gets an erection or he doesn’t. If the pill works—which it does on 80 percent of eligible patients—great. If it doesn’t, then doctors may try the vascular tests to look for other problems. For men who want to try a simple test to see if they have at least a baseline degree of erectile function—which can then be magnified through the use of the right aphrodisiac—there’s the Postage-stamp Erection Test.

There are new topical creams being tested that may also prove to be beneficial. One such cream contains nitroglycerin as the active ingredient for vasodilatation. Any type of aphrodisiac that works to help produce an erection has a place in patient use. Even though the evidence for herbal products, for instance, is mainly anecdotal, they are also useful for many men and women.

These new pills, which we’ll analyze later on, are already being seen as miracle drugs. As clinical testing is completed and they gain FDA approval, the market for them is expected to match that of the standard aphrodisiacs—that is, approaching $1 billion a year.
